On 6 January 1999, Visioneer sold the hardware business and the Visioneer brand name to Primax Electronics, Ltd., and on 2 March 1999, Visioneer acquired ScanSoft, in a cash election merger, from Xerox Corporation. The corporate entity "Visioneer" survived the merger, but changed its name to "ScanSoft, Inc." On 18 October 2005, the company changed the name to "Nuance Communications, Inc."
