Nuance Appoints Alan Fowles to Senior Vice President, Healthcare International Sales & Operations
New role underlines recent investments in international business and will help advance Nuance’s range of speech-based clinical documentation solutions globally
London, UK. – September 28, 2015 – Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced that Alan Fowles has joined Nuance UK as senior vice president, Healthcare international sales and operations. His appointment, which is effective immediately, will further secure Nuance’s position as strategic partner and expert in healthcare internationally. Residing in the UK, Fowles reports to Trace Devanny, president of the Healthcare Division, Nuance.
Fowles will have direct responsibility for all international client-facing functions such as sales, sales operations, product management, marketing, professional services and technical support. Fowles joins Nuance at a time when healthcare regulation, reforms and pressure from patients is causing the healthcare industry globally to rethink how it uses technology to improve patient care, while at the same time helping healthcare professionals deal with the challenges of fewer financial and professional resources.
Against this backdrop, Fowles’ skills and experience will be instrumental in helping healthcare providers to expand their understanding and use of Nuance’s range of speech-based clinical documentation solutions and professional services, which strengthen the clinician-patient relationship. By offering speech as an effective interface to Electronic Patient Records (EPRs) and other Clinical Information Systems, Nuance solutions help clinicians spend more time treating patients, while providing the complete patient story at the point of care when it’s needed most.
“It is our pleasure to welcome Alan to Nuance,” said Trace Devanny of Nuance. “He brings immense hands-on experience in driving growth, profitability and leadership for technology companies in healthcare. His background and experience from the EPR world is invaluable to Nuance. We look forward to his insights and his many contributions for further developing the strategy and growth for Nuance Healthcare, in EMEA and beyond.”
Fowles adds, “Speech recognition and EPRs go hand-in-hand and complement each other perfectly, given that the accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation is essential for integrated, effective, efficient and safe delivery of care. With EPRs finding favour with healthcare providers globally and speech a natural interface to them, I believe we are on the cusp of a new wave of international demand for Nuance’s speech and clinical documentation solutions. I am equally excited about the healthcare revolution that will be driven by this technology, which I believe has the capacity to transform the quality of care delivered while addressing the resource challenges healthcare providers face.”
Fowles joins Nuance from IMDsoft where he was senior vice president and managing director, focused on leading the sales division for the EMEA and North America regions. Prior to iMDsoft, Fowles enjoyed a very successful career at Cerner in a variety of roles and responsibilities, culminating in his position as vice president and managing director for EMEA and vice president for Cerner in Europe.
Fowles has had an expansive 32-year career within the healthcare sector, gaining not only knowledge and expertise in the private healthcare IT sector, but also in the public hospital network. He has a unique knowledge set and experience in radiology from early in his career having held a leadership role at StorCOMM Technologies, a PACS solutions company. His experience spans the provider side, having held a number of roles in the UK National Healthcare System as a radiology clinician, operations director and imaging general manager.
Today, Nuance is the strategic partner of more than 10,000 healthcare organisations worldwide, enabling them to thrive in the face of increasing industry pressures. Nuance enables hospitals and healthcare providers to capture, understand and communicate the patient story so they can meet today’s demanding healthcare requirements and regulations, while also preparing for tomorrow’s shift to value-based care.
