Nuance releases revolutionary cloud-based speech recognition platform for healthcare

First live streaming solution enables 360° of speech recognition coverage across the healthcare enterprise business – quickly and easily as never before


London, UK, 29 February 2012 - Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN) announced today the availability of its 360 | Development Platform, including the new SpeechAnywhere Services, the latest release of SpeechMagic, as well as Dragon Medical Network Edition, a new cloud-based, real-time speech recognition software.


“Speech-enabling clinical applications on computers, web browsers, tablet PCs or smart phones, such as iPhones, has changed from a complex process to the easiest thing to do. Nuance can deliver high-end speech recognition at the click of a button; hospital-wide, literally within minutes. Today, every doctor in every hospital can have access to the benefits of speech recognition, on whichever device they prefer to use”, says Stefan Herm, Vice President and General Manager, Nuance Healthcare EMEA.

The users can use practically any device and start dictating wherever they want”, says Andreas Kaysler, CIO of the Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt hospitals in Germany. The Head of Surgery at the same organisation, Dr B. Mann adds: “Being able to dictate at the cursor, directly in the EHR is a major breakthrough! The time it saves is astonishing, as is the improvement in quality.”


Major innovation: Speech-enabling mobile devices

The cloud-based 360 | Development Platform is the obvious choice to enable us to deliver speech recognition on smart phones and tablet devices”, says Jens Aasmundtveit, CEO Max Manus Group in Scandinavia, one of Nuance’s early adopters of the new platform.


With this new service-oriented approach, Nuance is the first provider to enable live-streaming speech recognition for healthcare. It also brings cloud-based, real-time speech recognition on mobile devices and is expected to lead to a breakthrough in bed-side computing.


Commenting on the role of speech recognition for the usability of mobile technology in healthcare, Martin Peuker, Deputy CIO of the Charité University Hospital in Berlin says: “Speech recognition is the only acceptable method of data input on tablet devices. Equipping mobile devices with powerful speech recognition will lead to the breakthrough of mHealth solutions.”


The integration of speech in any healthcare IT application, including mobile applications, on any operating system, including iOS and Android, follows the design principle of the three zeros: zero weight, zero integration, zero deployment.


“The design of Nuance’s new cloud-based platform, means zero weight on hospitals, clinics and GP offices when deploying and operating an electronic speech infrastructure. It also eliminates any integration effort and requires only one-click to speech-enable any healthcare IT solution you want,” Herm says.


The 360 | Development Platform will offer the ability to incorporate speech recognition capabilities in the clinical applications of third-party developers in nearly real-time. It supports 22 recognition languages and will be available to hospitals via an on-premise cloud from which speech recognition will be delivered.


The 360 | Development Platform launch comprises:

  • The brand new 360 | SpeechAnywhere Services allowing Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to quickly and easily speech-enable healthcare applications as a natural extension of their user interface, whether on mobile devices, thin clients, web browsers or desktops, with minimal development effort.
  • The new Release 3 of the 360 | SpeechMagic SDK7. This new release of the SpeechMagic SDK, designed to be deeply embedded into clinical applications, allows existing Nuance integration partners to access the full capabilities of the 360 | Development Platform.
  • Dragon Medical 360 | Network Edition, built on top of the 360 | Development Platform, is a ready-to-use, front-end speech recognition application, very convenient for doctors to click and dictate at the cursor anywhere in their EHR. It is particularly suited for thin client environments such as Citrix; all recognition tasks are processed in the cloud.

Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who wish to integrate speech recognition in their clinical application are invited to register for Nuance’s Developer Program at www.nuancehealthcaredeveloper.com. The program has been designed to help the developer community implement and deploy the full potential of the new platform in their clinical workflow applications.
