Support and FAQ

Q. What do I need to do to install your software?
A. First of all, you should install the Nokia PC Suite. While you can use the installer from the CD-ROM that comes with your handset, it may be advantageous to install the most recent version of PC Suite. You can get it here:

http://europe.nokia.com/A4144907

Please note that the easiest method to connect a newer Series 60 handset to your PC is to use the USB cable that is shipped with your handset in most cases. If your phone does not have the so-called POP port, you have to rely on other connectivity methods, like Bluetooth or infrared.

After you have successfully installed the Nokia PC Suite, please follow these steps:

  • Download the files required to install your Nuance mobile product. All required files for a specific language will usually be combined into one ZIP archive. Extract this archive to a newly created folder.
  • Connect your handset to your PC. You can check the connection status by pointing your mouse at the PC Suite icon in the system tray.
  • If you install a speech product, you will need to install two files. To install them, simply open Windows Explorer and point it to the folder containing the extracted files. Then select the file to install and double-click your mouse or press the Enter key to start the installation process. The Nokia installer will ask you to confirm that you want to install the requested file.
  • The first file is the text-to-speech engine in the requested language; this will most likely be RealSpeak Mobile (file name is "rsm*.sis") or ETI Eloquence (file name is "eloquence*.sis"). Please note that this installer will not create an icon in your phone's menu.
  • The second file to install is the actual application, like "Nuance Speech2Go Reader", "TALKS" or "ZOOMS". This will create an icon to run inside your phone's menu.
  • Any such installation process is initiated from the PC side and continued on the phone. During the installation, you will be prompted to choose the memory to use for the files to install. Here you can find a few hints about the advantages and drawbacks of installing to the internal or external memory.
  • Generally, we recommend that you install to the internal phone memory, if your handset offers enough internal space, like the E-Series devices and most of the N-Series phones.
  • If your handset does not offer more than 10MB of internal memory, or if you do not plan to use more than one memory card, it is preferable to install to the memory card or hard drive of your handset. This leaves valuable space for your phone's internal memory. With the MMC card, the drawback is that you have to use the same card, whenever you run the speech application.
  • With TALKS, please do not install to the hard drive of the N91. TALKS is started automatically when your phone is running, but the hard drive is not always active at this time.

Q. How can I install a new release of your software?
A. You have to follow the same instructions as for the first-time installation. If you use a version of Nuance Speech2Go Reader, TALKS or ZOOMS older than 3.10, you should first deactivate the application. For Speech2Go Reader, simply close its configuration dialogue. For TALKS and ZOOMS, open the settings application, then choose "Options" and select "Deactivate". During the installation process, you will be prompted about the replacement of the old version by the new one, and you have to confirm that this is what you want. Please note that this confirmation dialogue does show the major and minor version number, i.e. 3.10, but not the point release number, like 3.10.2.

Q. Attempting to install a SIS file on the phone fails with a "Certificate error" or similar message.
A. There are two reasons for the majority of such failures:

The date on the phone is set incorrectly, and as a result the certificate on the SIS file is considered invalid. To fix this, set the phone's clock to today's date. Normally, this error only occurs on S60 3rd Edition, or on Symbian Signed versions with S60 1st/2nd Edition.
On some phones (e.g. Vodafone-branded devices and all E-Series models) the installation of SIS files that are not Symbian Signed is prohibited by default. However, you can go to "App. Manager", and then select Options > Settings > Software installation. This should be set to "Yes" or "All", but not "Signed only".
Please note that on Vodafone KK/Softbank phones in Japan, it may not be possible to change this. Here, installing unsigned parts of TALKS is generally not possible. For 2nd Edition, an unsupported workaround using the free Halwin tool is possible.

Q. My handset runs Series 60 3rd Edition, but it is not included in your list of supported handsets. Can I install your software anyway?

A. You can install our software to your 3rd Edition handset, and use the free trial period to see if it is working. But please note that we can only support it on handsets that we have tested.

Q. I have selected the "Silent" profile. Why do I no longer get automatic announcements?
A. From version 3.10 upward, Nuance Speech2Go Reader and TALKS are muted as long as the "Silent" profile is selected. This ensures that your handset stays quiet when you select that profile at night. And it is a required feature for getting an application Symbian Signed. Please note that you can un-mute TALKS to hear automatic output even in the "Silent" profile, and that speech is not disabled for TALKS commands.

Q. I have enabled the automatic read-out of incoming messages. Why is that SMS not read?
A. To ensure that new messages are being read, please read all messages in your inbox. If the inbox contains unread messages, a new message is not read automatically.

Q. Why are caller ID and text messages not read on my Nokia N71?
A. You have to open the N71 to allow for the caller ID and message read-out to work properly.
